Many children that come into my clinic every year who are chronically unwell, always under the weather, low energy and failing to thrive. One of the major causes of all these symptoms are unidentified food intolerances.
Here are the most common symptoms of food intolerance I see in my clinic:
- Early intolerance to dairy, cow’s milk or even breast milk
- Abnormal bowel function including diarrhoea and constipation
- Strong smelling urine
- Recurrent abdominal pain
- Dark rings under the eyes and low energy
- Poor growth and development – often delayed milestones
- Low iron and children look very pale
- Poor concentration and learning difficulties
- Poor sleep
- Night terrors
- Anxiety, fears, mood swings and separation anxiety
- Flushed red cheeks
- Self restricted diet ie: they only heat a few foods or the ‘white food diet’ – bread, rice and pasta
- OCD symptoms and not wanting to go to school
The most common intolerances are to gluten and dairy however wheat, yeast, additives, preservatives, filling agents, soy and other grains can also be major causes of the symptoms listed above. The best protocol is to watch your child 24-72 hours after eating the food that you suspect the intolerance to. Some children will have a strong reaction within 2-4 hours however most will be delayed.
These symptoms of food intolerance combined with the damage that these foods create in the gut can lead to leaky gut so it is very helpful to know and be able to quantify exactly what the food intolerance is through testing or elimination. I thoroughly do trials in my clinic to be able to evaluate and determine the exact diet restrictions that are needed to prevent further damage and leaky gut. The most important thing is to do the eliminations and then begin to see the incredible changes in symptoms, quality life and development for these children.
