How to Avoid Sunstroke

It’s that time of the year again when temperatures soar to new highs and no matter what you do, you can’t seem find the most effective way to get rid of that invisible blanket surrounding your whole body. While summer provides everyone with the opportunity to explore and enjoy the great outdoors, it also places them at risk of suffering from sunstroke. If you have plans to hit the beach or go on a road trip this summer, here are simple yet effective ways to avoid heat stroke.

Tip No 1: Wear light clothing

If you are going go hiking or spend a considerable amount of time outside, make sure you avoid wearing dark and tight-fitting clothes. Instead, wear loose, light-coloured clothing so you won’t absorb too much of the sun’s rays. Loose clothing allows you to breathe much easily and move more freely, which is very important when doing physical activities while it is very hot out.

Tip No 2: Carry an umbrella

If you think umbrellas are just for the rainy season, think again. They are extremely useful when it is very hot outside. If you’re going to walk under the sun, make sure to use an umbrella. An umbrella can repel the sun’s rays and help reduce your risk of suffering from sunstroke.

Tip No 3: Drink up

Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, especially if you’re doing something strenuous. When you sweat, you lose essential fluids and minerals like sodium. By drinking plenty of water and/or sports drink, you will be able to replenish the fluids and minerals you have lost. Be sure to stock your fridge with bottles of water and don’t forget to take some with you when you go out.

Tip No 4: Avoid caffeine and alcohol.

As mentioned earlier, it is very important to keep yourself hydrated when the temperatures are scorching hot. However, make sure that you avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol. It is because these substances are known to cause dehydration. To avoid your risk of suffering from sunstroke, make sure to drink water and sports drinks, and not those beverages with high caffeine and alcohol content.

Tip No 5: Plan your activity around peak hours

If you have plans to go out or do certain activities under the sun, you should plan your schedule accordingly. To avoid heat stroke, make sure you do them during the cooler parts of the day. When it is very hot outside, take it easy and stay indoors as much as possible.
