What your poo says about you!

I was out with family friends the other night, kicking back and having a relaxing evening when we got talking about a topic most people don’t generally discuss with others; POO!

In fact I was the first one to admit that every time I have one, I actually look at it!

The verbal remarks that followed were hilarious, and there was a lot of banter on the topic, but laughter aside, checking your poo before you flush is very important!
Why? Because your poo reveals a lot about your current state of health.

Here’s what to look for:

Ideally you should aim to have a bowel movement after every meal. Two poos a day is the goal!

A healthy poo should resemble the shape of a torpedo, and should come out with ease.
If you are tensing, or patiently meditating on the throne so that it can come out then you are probably constipated.

Brown is the colour your poo should be. Occasionally it may change colour depending on what foods and supplements you consume (for example beetroots, or iron supplements) but don’t panic. This should only last for one or two bowel movements. If it persists, then your poo is calling for a check-up.

If it floats and smells, your body may not be absorbing fats properly.

As I always tell my patients, you don’t know how good you can feel until you feel good again. Well this applies to your daily bowel movements too.
Western lifestyles, lack of nutrition and stress can all affect your digestion which is the reason your bowels may not be functioning well. Over a period of time you may be conditioned to live with (or tolerate) constipation, bloating, IBS and other digestion related conditions.
